The Salida High School girlsâ tennis team rebounded from Wednesdayâs loss to Pueblo West and trounced the Colorado Springs Christian School Lady Lions 6-1 Thursday at home.
Seniors Caroline Edgington and Raley Patch, the No. 1 doubles team, fought a tough battle for what coach Josh Bechtel called âour toughest win today,â winning their first set 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker, losing their second set 4-6 then winning 10-8 on a 10-point tiebreaker.
âThey were looking to bounce back from yesterdayâs loss, and it was fun to watch them building up their confidence and aggression as they played,â Bechtel said. âThey fell behind about 4-0 during the third set tiebreaker, so we had a short talk, and they were ready to go for it. It was a great way to battle back.â
Pressing Woodland Park for the majority of the contest, Salida forced 22 turnovers in the game.Â
Sarah Chick, meanwhile, led the teamâs offense by scoring a season-high 14 points. Chick also blocked three shots in the game.Â
Salida was without a trio of starters for the contest, including Rachel Pelino, Raley Patch and Emma Wilkins.Â
âWith three out of five starters out of the lineup, other kids stepped up,â said head coach Lee Lewis.Â
Salida improved to 4-5 overall and 3-5 in the 3A Tri-Peaks League with the win while Woodland slipped to 2-5, 1-3.Â
The Salidaâs boys basketball team also took on Woodland Park Tuesday. The Spartans won that contest 80-65.
