The Salida High School girls’ tennis team is sending nine competitors to state after finishing runner-up at the 3A Region 7 tournament Friday and Saturday in Pueblo.
The Salida girlsâ tennis team won the Colorado High School Athletics and Activities 3A Region 7 championship tournament Saturday by a literal coin flip.
Coach Josh Bechtel said while Salida lead Pueblo County by four points on Friday, he was told the teams were tied at the end of the tournament Saturday, so it was decided on the flip of a coin, which Salida won.
Two doubles teams won their final matches to win regionals.Â
No. 2 doubles team, senior Allyna Bright and junior Lydia Tonnesen beat their opponents from Pueblo County.
Juniors Brooke Bright and Vivian Volkmann won as the No. 3 doubles, finishing their season undefeated.
Pueblo Central is in second place, four point behind.Â
âToday was as good as I could hope for,â coach Josh Bechtel said. âThe girls were awesome today. Iâm so proud of them.â
Junior Maddie Anderson, the No. 1 singles player, will play Carlie Sweckard from Pueblo South in the finals Friday.
No. 2 doubles team, senior Allyna Bright and junior Lydia Tonnesen will play in the finals against Sage Russell and Khaeli Salazar from Pueblo County.
Juniors Brooke Bright and Vivian Volkmann, the No. 3 doubles team, will play in the finals against Emily Noll and Kaylee Peabody from La Junta.
No. 4 doubles team, junior Anne Hill and sophomore Megan Rhude will play La Juntaâs Dajiana Herman and Torrin Mendoza-Werner in the finals.
