Raleigh flooded graves: VA gives timeline for Raleigh National Cemetery flooding repairs after dozens of veteran graves left underwater

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) The southeast corner of the Raleigh National Cemetery is slowly drying out, though there are signs where water once stood. Several graves, including ones belonging to World War 1 and World War II soldiers, have muddy water marks. A week ago, the flooding was extensive in a section of the cemetery and ABC11 found more than four dozen graves peeking out from the water. Area residents told ABC11 this was not a one-off caused by rain. One woman, who lives in the East Raleigh neighborhood, said the cemetery, which is maintained by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, is flooded 75 percent of the time.

More than four dozen veterans graves at Raleigh National Cemetery left sitting underwater

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) By mid-afternoon Tuesday, water was being pumped out of a flooded section of the Raleigh National Cemetery. Dozens of graves had been sitting underwater. There was a certain smell in the air at the southeast corner of the Raleigh National Cemetery if you were to walk by Tuesday morning. It was musky. The scent not overpowering, but something you can recognize when water has been sitting there for a while. More than four dozen tombs were underwater. There were mud marks on graves indicating how the water was ever so slightly receding. Some of the flooded tombs were for soldiers who fought in the infantry during World War I and an Army captain who led a company in the Vietnam War. Other graves were for service members who served during World War II and Korea.
