Actor Mark York, who played property manager Billy Merchant in The Office US, has died following a “brief and unexpected illness”, his family confirmed.

The obituary released by York’s family continued: “Even though he has been paraplegic since 1988, he had such an outgoing, uplifting, positive attitude and personality. He always tried to look at what he could accomplish and do, not what he couldn’t do. He had experienced many travel opportunities and many dreams for the future.”
York first played Billy Merchant in The Office season two episode 12, The Injury. The episode saw Dunder Mifflin boss Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell) bring Merchant in for a Disability Awareness meeting which, unsurprisingly, goes off the rails. The fan favourite episode revolves around Michael burning his foot with a George Foreman grill and comparing the injury to a disability.
It was revealed in the season four episode of
The Office titled “Goodbye, Toby,” that Jan was pregnant and that Michael Scott was not the father (even though he assumed he was at first). Jan said in the episode that she went to a sperm bank. The baby eventually was born and we learn in season five that Jan named her Astird. The show never revealed who the baby’s father actually was though, but now we know.

In an episode that managed to jerk tears without getting too sappy or away from its comedy roots, NBC’s flagship comedy “The Office” waved goodbye to its star Steve Carell in the extended “Goodbye, Michael” episode Thursday.
The episode revolved around Carell’s character Michael Scott slyly having goodbye interactions with each of his Dunder Mifflin coworkers (all on fairly good terms–even the one with Toby) under the notion that he was leaving for Holly and Colorado the following day. In reality, he was actually departing that day at 4PM but did not want to face his office family for an actual goodbye celebration. Particularly-emotional goodbye moments for Michael included his writing Dwight a glowing recommendation letter (and engaging in a subsequent game of paintball) and Jim, who caught onto Michael’s plan, telling Carell’s character that he was a great boss and the best one he ever had.
