Debate: For Young People in Conflict With the Law, Mere Rehabilitation Is Not Enough

Debate: For Young People in Conflict With the Law, Mere Rehabilitation Is Not Enough What is required is deeper, more holistic and essentially restorative. Photo: James Todd/Unsplash Raghu Raman’s article, Don’t Let Juvenile Delinquents Become Repeat Offenders, Rehabilitate Them published on April 23, 2021, makes an appeal to society to invest in, emphathise with and rehabilitate young offenders. He posits that they are a small group and that “it makes more sense to rehabilitate slightly damaged juveniles than to suffer severely marred criminals”. While we recognise the intent of the author for revisiting our justice processes relating to young offenders and the need to engage with them, we strongly disagree with Raman’s account of these young people. We argue, merely empathising and rehabilitating young people in conflict with the law is not enough. What is required is deeper, more holistic and essentially restorative.

How to win the war against Covid-19

How to win the war against Covid-19 Raghu Raman An all-hands-on-deck approach by citizens and organisations is needed to win this war. Political and ideological differences must be kept aside Two million people perished during the bloody birth of our nation. The pandemic has claimed one-tenth of that number already. There is no negating its severity anymore because even the staunchest deniers are sick, dying or cremating their families. Our health infrastructure has already collapsed and we have yet to face subsequent waves as super-spreader melas and rallies start their transmission cycles. India is waging a third world war. And a nation at war cannot afford internal squabbling.
