Sc s contempt notices to Kamra, Rachita Taneja KT NEWS SERVICE. Dated: 12/19/2020 12:32:45 PM
NEW DELHI, Dec 18: The Supreme Court on Friday issued show-cause notices of criminal contempt on stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra and Bengaluru-based cartoonist Rachita Taneja for their alleged scandalous tweets against it, seeking their response within six weeks in two separate cases and fixing the next hearing on February 1.
The contempt petitions against Kamra have been filed by one Abhyudayaa Mishra of Gorakhpur and Skand Bajpai while Aditya Kashyam of Darbhanga, Bihar, moved a writ petition against Taneja, a Delhi-born comic illustrator who draws illustrations on her website Sanitary Panels on politics, society and culture.
Another law student, Aditya Kashyap, has submitted that some of Taneja’s social media posts are contemptuous, and urged the court to restrain her from publishing material that undermines its authority.
Granting his consent for initiation of contempt proceedings, Attorney General for India K K Venugopal had said: “I find that today people believe that they can boldly and brazenly condemn the Supreme Court of India and its judges by exercising what they believe is their freedom of speech. But… freedom of speech is subject to the law of contempt and… it is time that people understand that attacking the Supreme Court unjustifiedly… will attract punishment…”

Chinaâs footprint has forced Modi government to make nice with Dhaka after unfairly targeting Bangladeshis for its political ends. Itâs a lesson BJP needs to remember as it heads into polarising elections in Bengal. Larger geostrategic interests involving friendly neighbours cannot be sacrificed at the altar of narrow electoral priorities.
UP on a dangerous slide with its ‘love jihad’ law. Its police, politics must be held accountable
Uttar Pradesh is on a dangerous slide applying its new inter-faith ordinance retrospectively. Itâs unconstitutional and has tragic consequences, like in Pinky and Rashidâs case. She married out of free will, and has miscarried after the authorities took her away. UPâs runaway police and politics must be checked, held accountable.
SC sends showcause notice to Kunal Kamra for contempt proceedings Bench posts matter for further hearing after 6 weeks
The Supreme Court on Friday issued separate notices to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra and cartoonist Rachita Taneja asking them to show cause as to why they should not be prosecuted for contempt over their remarks against the top court and the Chief Justice of India.
A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, R. Subhash Reddy and M.R. Shah, while hearing a batch of petitions seeking contempt proceedings against the two, posted the matter for further hearing after six weeks.
However, the bench exempted Kamra and Taneja from personally appearing before it. Under the Contempt of Court Act, it is mandatory for the alleged contemnor to be present in court during the hearing unless granted an exemption.
