‘All the Jews are Holocaust Survivors’
‘To tell you the truth, all the Jews of the world are Holocaust survivors’ – said legendary Rabbi
Yisrael Meir Lau, 83-year old, in his speech on the 76-th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. I always thought this way, ever since I learned about Holocaust in my early age. Holocaust lived in our family, as it lived in the families of everyone we knew, and those we did not.
It was personal, and it was not personal at the same time. It was and is cosmic. Both, that crime and that survival.

Shmitta Is Coming Soon
This upcoming Jewish New Year, 5782, begins is special and unique only to the Land of Israel, as it is 7th year,
the Shmita year. Â We are forbidden to work the land during the Shmita year. Â It is to remain fallow. Â It is a commandment from the Torah that prescribes that the land rests for a year:

What is the Torah Basis of Shmitta?
We read in the Torah (Sh’mot 23:10-11), “You may plant your land for six years and gather its crops. But during the seventh year, you must leave it alone and withdraw from it. The needy among you will then be able to eat just as you do, and whatever is left over can be eaten by wild animals. This also applies to your vineyard and your olive grove.”

We are often told that sex, religion and politics are to be avoided in polite company and many feel that should apply in Shule as well. After all, they would argue that Shule is a place of refuge from the storm, a therapeutic oasis in a wilderness of strife and struggle. Prayer, they would add, should soothe and calm you. And the rabbi’s sermon should make you feel good, inspire you to focus on Torah and Halacha, the joys of Shabbat, the virtue of attending Shule services and the privilege of being part of a robust community.
