Queensland s GPS tracker trial to target up to 100 repeat youth offenders By state political reporter Kate McKenna © Provided by ABC NEWS The government is proceeding with a 12-month GPS device trial. (Supplied) Up to 100 teenage repeat offenders could be considered for GPS monitoring under the Palaszczuk government s proposed tracker trial, according to Queensland authorities. As public hearings continue in regional Queensland into the sweeping youth justice changes, a joint departmental brief from the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Department of Youth Justice to the parliamentary committee probing the bill, has shed further light on the measures. Taking into consideration the number of recidivist youth offenders aged 16 to 17 years in the trial locations for the period 1 January to 31 December, 2020, it is estimated that up to 100 youths may be considered for electronic monitoring (subject to the court s discretion to determine their suitability),

Murri Carnival postponed due to COVID-19

The Carnival was originally scheduled to run in September, has been postponed.  In a statement posted to social media, the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council, a major sponsor of the Carnival, confirmed the news. We simply do not want to take the risk of out competitors, coaches and spectators coming into contact with COVID-19 at this time, or the UK strain being taken outside of the Greater Brisbane Area, QAIHC CEO James William said. This decision was made with the health of our local communities and Queensland as our priority. Whilst this is not the news we were hoping to deliver, the health and wellbeing of the community is paramount and we hope that you all stay sage, healthy and COVID-aware during this time.
