supporting empowerment. providing smart technology housing for very, very badly wounded service members. i understand you met travis mills. an ambassador for my foundation. quadruple amputee, we built a house for him in maine. he s a resilient guy among many extraordinary people they met. we ve done between 60 and 70 houses from the beginning when i started doing to now. we have supported programs called serving heroes, which send messages out to usos and va s all over the country, by providing food and entertainment for the veterans that are either coming through a travel hub or maybe living in a va or something like that. we don t want them to be forgotten. that s the important thing. i always remember that great quote by calvin coolidge, the nation which forgets its defenders will itself be
quadruple amputee staff sergeant travis mills. tell us about that. it s kind of funny because you look at i never would ever consider al qaeda, isis or the taliban, you know, my toughest enemies. my mind was my toughest enemy. my demons, internal demons, the survivor s guilt, the nights in the hospital where no one s around and you re thinking about, hey, why are you here when four incredible americans are gone? and you start thinking about, i don t belong here. i don t deserve to be here. so i was in a very dark place. and with the addition to all of the drugs i was receiving for my injuries, i was thinking about, you know, ending my life, but travis mills came in with four prosthetics, both arms and both legs in november of 2012 and in 15 minutes he changed my life. he reminded me of the importance of honoring my brothers, of the oath that i took when i put on the uniform to serve my nation to the best of my ability.
operate on me, my leg went with it. became a triple amputee. two nurses pumped air into my lungs for nine hours straight. nine hours. nine hours straight pumping it. to stay alive. april 12th they cut my hand off. april 14th i woke up for the first time in germ nip my 25th birthday. to find out from my brother-in-law the extent of my injury. quadruple amputee. what did he say to you? the first thing, they asked if i knew my name. kept saying mills. like the movie brave heart getting louder. i said how are my soldiers? two guys got hurt with me. i knew that. i said, am i paralyze? no, you re not paralyzed. i looked at him, josh, can you tell me the truth? i can t feel my fingers and toes, am i paralyzed? he said you re not, you don t have your fingers and toes anymore. i went, oh. i was real quiet for a while. i didn t want to call my family. i was pretty embarrassed. you were embarrassed. i was embarrassed. let down. my family. you know, i wasn t good at my job, something
