"We are deeply shocked by the verdict of the death penalty and are awaiting the detailed judgement. We are in touch with the family members and the legal team, and we are exploring all legal options," the MEA said.
The visit was facilitated by Dahra Consultancies, the company they were working for. While the charges against them have not officially been revealed, reports suggest they are accused of spying for Israel.
The MEA spokesperson's statement came after Congress leader Jairam Ramesh asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not pressing for their release despite the two countries sharing a good relationship.
Meetu Bhargava, whose brother is one of the detained former naval officers, said the detention was extended for another 30 days. The families' hopes "have crashed", she said.
