The Yolo Audubon Society will conduct its 50th annual Putah Creek Christmas Bird Count on Sunday, Dec. 20. While participation is limited this year due to the coronavirus, the count will take place, and the public is invited to view the compilation meeting at 7 p.m. Sunday. Bird count coordinator Steve Hampton will provide the numbers and historical analysis.
The Christmas Bird Count is a nationwide bird survey and has been conducted by the national Audubon Society for 121 years. Held in December and early January, the count is run by volunteers, and each group selects a 15-mile diameter circle in their region. The Putah Creek circle is centered at the Pleasants Valley Road bridge across Lake Solano, and the exact same area has been surveyed every year since 1971.
