BMS Professor Co-leads Research on Tissue-engineered Implants that Offer Hope for Patients with Vocal Injuries | Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine

A collaborative team consisting of Purdue biomedical engineers and clinicians from IU has tissue-engineered component tissue replacements that support reconstruction of the larynx. (Stock image) New technology from innovators at Purdue University and the Indiana University School of Medicine may one day help patients who suffer devastating vocal injuries from surgery on the larynx.  A collaborative team consisting of Purdue biomedical engineers and clinicians from IU has tissue-engineered component tissue replacements that support reconstruction of the larynx. The innovation team is led by Stacey Halum, MD, FACS, a fellowship-trained laryngologist specializing in head and neck surgery, along with Sherry Harbin, PhD, who holds a joint appointment as a professor of basic medical sciences in the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and professor of biomedical engineering in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. The team’s work is published in The Laryngoscope.

Rachel E. Stark Rachel Elizabeth “Betty” Stark was a member of the first team of women to climb the Himalayas. Later, she moved mountains in the scientific understanding of a baby’s babbling. Stark came to Purdue in 1987 to become head of the Department of Audiology and Speech Sciences, arriving with a portfolio of experiences.  Stark was born in Scotland and earned degrees from Jordanhill College of Education of Glasgow, Glasgow’s School of Speech Therapy, and the Royal Academy of Music of London. She was a speech therapist within the public school system and worked in a hospital system in Scotland.
