Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his disappointment with the Army for not providing a guard of honour during the last rites of Agniveer Amritpal Singh, who died in Jammu and Kashmir. The Army stated that since Singh s cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot injury, no military funeral was provided. Mann said his government would raise the issue with the Centre and provide Singh s family with a compensation of Rs 1 crore. He also criticized the Army for sending Singh s body in a private ambulance and questioned why a guard of honour was not given.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has stated that no additional water will be shared with any other state at any cost. The state cabinet has also approved Gurminder Singh for the advocate general s post. The meeting discussed the Sutlej-Yamuna-Link (SYL) canal issue. This comes after the Supreme Court directed the Centre to survey the land allocated for the canal s construction. Punjab s political parties have stated that they have no additional water to share, while Haryana s parties have welcomed the court s directions.
The elections of the SGPC, which is also known as the Sikh Parliament, are to be held after every five years as per law, but the present general house was elected in 2011. While hearing a petition, advocating the right to vote to ‘Sehajdhari Sikhs’, the Supreme Court (SC) had stayed the house from taking over and asked the then executive to run the SGPC affairs.
In December last year, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema rejected the idea of a moratorium on repayment of debt after a group of economists from Punjab had written to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to help the debt-ridden state by way of moratorium.
