Starting the end of May, Jersey City police officers will have their eyes on the city’s closed-circuit television cameras, focusing on crime “hotspots” and “known or suspected criminals.”
The city is moving the CCTV unit away from civilians in the communications division, to police officers in investigative units on a full-time basis starting May 31, human resources deputy director Scott Carbone said in a letter to Julio Cordero, the president of the Jersey City Public Employees Union Local 246, and union lawyer Paul Mackey.

“We’ve been working on major structural changes over the years, and establishing civilian oversight creates more lines of accountability and solvency, which will ultimately lead to better results for residents and officers with decreased crime, better accountability, and more transparency,” Mayor Steven Fulop said in a statement.
“When a civilian files a complaint to Internal Affairs, no one is aware of the results or if disciplinary actions are warranted. Public perspective is just as valuable as police perspective, and I believe this latest step we’re taking will strengthen police/community relations.”
One year after slaying, Jersey City honors memory of Police Det. Joseph Seals
By Daniel Ulloa/Hudson County View
One year ago, the mass shooting, later deemed an Anti-Semitic, domestic terrorist attack, took the life of Seals, Leah Minda Ferencz, Douglas Miguel Rodriguez, and Moshe Deutsch.
Fulop thanked the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, Port Authority police, and officers from other municipal police departments for attending the ceremony at the Bayview cemetery – the location where Seals was fatally shot while meeting an informant who then reacted by creating a violent standoff with police.
“Today serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and commitment law enforcement make every single day because they choose to. Joseph Seals serves as an example of that,” Fulop said.
