Good afternoon, everybody. Thank you for joining todays briefing on covid19 in North Carolina. Dying from covid19 or mourning a loved one who right now can be isolating and difficult. We are praying for all those who are suffering now. Today, our concern is growing about the increase in cases and hospitalizations in North Carolina. This is also happening in many states across the country. While our hospitals still have this can we know change quickly. So we are working with hospitals and tracking hospitalizations and icu beds closely. Today is North Carolinas highest day of new cases since the pandemic started, and it is also the highest day of testing that weve had with over 21000 tests reported. But the high number of new cases is not just related to more testing. These numbers show the disease is spreading, that more people need hospital care. This has to be take
Nursing homes. We are joining this hearing in progress. Youre watching live coverage on cspan3. As one basis for work authorization. U. S. Cis has used deferred action in medical and humanitarian cases for decades. The idea is longstanding, and, in fact, customary. In one data set i received in 2011, nearly half of the cases i could identify involved serious medical conditions. And many of the cases involved more than one factor. For example, deferred action was granted to a 47yearold schizophrenic who overstayed his visa, was the son of a lawful perm resident, and had siblings who were u. S. Citizens. Over 100 of these cases involved people whose homes were destroyed by an earthquake in haiti. In another data set, a 578 cases obtained from u. S. Cis in 2013, 336 were based on medical issues. One case involved a mexican female who entered the United States without inspection and had two u. S. Citizen children. One of her children had down syndrome, and the other child had serious medic
Schoolwide coronavirus tests to make sure students and staff are safe when they return to the classroom. Widespread testing not only helps contain the virus, it builds confidence that the schools are safe. U. S. Assistant secretary for health told our committee that there will be 40 to 50 million diagnostic tests available per month by september. Thats four to five times the number of todays tests and todays number in the United States is twice as many as any other country. And dr. Francis collins who led the human genome project and leads the National Institutes of health, leads a shark tank enterprise at the nih to discover new ways to create tens of millions of quick and accurate and inexpensive diagnostic tests. School covid plans should let the plans last for at least a year. The government is pursuing vaccines at what it calls warp speed, faster than weve ever done that before, but no one expects a vaccine this august. And the second half of the school year, schools should be bet

Participatingare by videoconference. I would like to say a word about masks. The office of attending physicians advised us we may remove the mask and talk to the microphone as long as we are six feet apart. Msak imask isy off. When i am walking the senate floor, i am wearing a mask. Simple clothsd, help from transmitting it to others. Unfortunately this practice has become part of the political debate that says if you are forced from you do not wear a mask, if you are against trump you do. I suggested the president occasionally wear a mask even though, in most cases, it is not necessary for him to do so. The president has plenty of admirers. They would follow his lead. End this help an political debate. The stakes are too high about this to continue. Masksrs and staff wear because we do not w
