Pacific Gas and Electric Companyâs expanded network of enhanced weather technology, including weather stations and high-definition fire-watch cameras, helped reduce the size of each Public Safety Power Shutoff event in 2020 on average by 55%, the utility reported.
At the end of 2020, PG&E had 1,000 weather stations and 340 cameras in operation throughout Northern and Central California, providing more precise weather data to the companyâs team of meteorologists and outside agencies. More than 121 of those weather stations and 31 cameras are in the North Bay counties of Marin, Napa and Sonoma.
The weather stations, along with sectionalizing devices that isolate the grid into smaller segments and deployment of temporary generation and microgrids, enabled PG&E to keep the lights on for thousands of customers who would have lost power during comparable weather events in 2019, PG&E said. restore people to normal service. we are anticipating a 48-hour range, if you will, for our estimated time of restoration. this builds into that estimate the potential for finding damage on our system. as you recall, we identified several areas of damage, about 130 cases from the last psps event. we expect to find damage associated with this event as well. not quite as high. but we just want to message to everybody that our estimate bakes in time for repair activity for any damage that we find. on the customer front we have sent out another communication san mateo and the kern counties,
just to confirm that we intend to execute psps shortly after midnight. we need to have those areas of the service territory deenergized by 0200 hours. we intend to send a final communication to them around 8:00 p.m. this evening letting them know so that our customers and the agency partners can make plans. we have opened 28 community resource centers. all of them will be open tomorrow. the hours of operation are 8:00 in the morning until 8:00 in the evening. we did yesterday reach out to all of the counties that were affected, and we asked if there was any interest in opening any of those counties. earlier today we received some interest in that area. so we opened six community resource centers today. they ll be open until 8:00 p.m. so one final note before i turn it back to bill, i just
