SALT LAKE CITY Utah s protections for renters are weaker than in most states, but a proposal at the state Legislature could help give them a leg up, according to a new analysis from law students at the University of Utah.
The Beehive State doesn t require landlords to disclose all the fees tenants must cover on top of rent. Rep. Marsha Judkins is now seeking to change that so tenants don t wind up with unexpected bills by sponsoring HB68. It s a consumer protection bill, like truth in advertising, truth in lending, the Provo Republican said. You need to know what the cost is going to be before money changes hands.
Proponents of the merger say it will improve efficiency and information-sharing.

An attempt to combine two major state agencies the departments of health and human services is progressing through the Legislature with support from Utah’s new governor.
“We feel the best way to be more efficient and effective as we deliver services to the public is to combine these two agencies together and try to break down those silos and get communication going,” said Rep. Paul Ray, who’s sponsoring legislation to set this merger in motion. “So that people aren’t going to two, three, four different places to get services.”

Utah lawmakers are once again being asked to require landlords to disclose all fees up front to renters to avoid surprise charges. Last year the bill died without a final vote.
