DA to start hog sentineling in Pangasinan

(File photo) LINGAYEN, Pangasinan - The Department of Agriculture (DA) will start delivering piglets to areas in Pangasinan that have been affected by the African swine fever (ASF) on the third week of this month as part of its hog repopulation program. In an interview during his visit to Pangasinan on Friday, Agriculture Secretary William Dar said about PHP38.2 million has been allotted for the repopulation program in the province following the ASF outbreak. "The sentinels will be observed for about 90 to 120 days and then will be tested. If the tests turned negative, then the area will be declared free and they can start hog repopulation," Dar said. He added that the process of declaring an area as ASF-free has been reversed, as instead of the DA, the local government units (LGUs) would now confirm first if the area is no longer ASF-affected. (Bulacan PIO) Losses to rice (palay) from 1,147.60 hectares with 907 farmers affected were estimated at P20,643,227.18; vegetable from 66.57 hectares with 426 farmers affected P15,400,455.64; corn from 0.48 hectares with two farmers affected P5,214; and fishery from 1,544.19 area with 465 affected fishermen P52,952,320.26. Damage to infrastructure was estimated at P62,050,000 million as reported by the Provincial Engineer’s Office. Losses to livestock were placed at P12,600, according to the Provincial Veterinary Office.
