LONG BEACH (CNS) - A murder charge was filed today against a 44-year-old homeless man accused in the stabbing death of a fellow transient last October in Long Beach.
Charles Ray Jones is accused of killing of 41-year-old Nilton Cardoso, who was attacked in the area of Ocean Boulevard and The Promenade North at about 8:50 p.m. Oct. 6, according to Long Beach police.
Officers arrived at the scene and found Cardoso being treated by paramedics for multiple stab wounds to his chest. Cardoso died at a hospital.
Detectives uncovered evidence linking Jones to the stabbing, according to an LBPD statement. The investigation also revealed that Jones and Cardoso knew each other, and the stabbing may have stemmed from a dispute, police said.

On May 6, 2021 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Special Investigation Detectives located and arrested Charles Ray Jones, a 44-year-old individual experiencing homelessness in Long Beach. He was arrested on the 100 block of the Promenade. Jones was booked on one count of murder and is currently being held on $2,000,000 bail in the Long Beach City Jail.
Through their investigation, detectives discovered evidence linking Jones to the fatal Oct. 6, 2020 stabbing of a male adult victim.
The victim has been identified as 41-year-old Nilton Cardoso, an individual experiencing homelessness in Long Beach.
Cardoso and Jones were known to each other and may have been involved in a dispute when the assault occurred. The investigation remains active as detectives determine whether more persons were involved in the attack.
