Long Beach police detectives began investigating the death of 53-year-old Paul Machado in early 2021 after the Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner ruled his death was a homicide. By then, however, his death was already at least a month old.
On Nov. 24, 2020, Camacho told an acquaintance that he had been assaulted while in a “homeless shelter somewhere in Hollywood or the Hollywood area,” police said. Machado had been experiencing homelessness, authorities noted.
The next morning at 3:49 a.m. the Long Beach Fire Department was called to a residence in Cambodia Town along the 1300 block of Alhambra Court where they picked up Machado and took him to a local hospital. The coroner’s report said Machado died that same day on Nov. 25, 2020 from internal bleeding caused by blunt force abdominal trauma with laceration of the spleen.

After getting a call about the gunshots just after 9 a.m., officers found the wounded man, identified as Bernardo Solorio, in the 300 block of East 17th Street, which is near Long Beach Boulevard, police said.
Authorities rushed Solorio by ambulance to a local hospital in critical condition, police said. Later that evening, at around 7 p.m., police were notified that Solorio died from his injuries, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Police say the shooter, identified only as a male suspect, fled on foot after the crime.
While police have yet to identify the motive, they are investigating the incident as gang-related. The LBPD defines gang-related crimes as any crime committed “for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with any criminal street gang.”
