Two months ago, Teegavarapu Sarath Mohan decided the best way for his restaurant Vivaan to cope with Ontario’s pandemic stay-at-home order was to close temporarily.
Naturally, he’s glad the province’s order lifted last week and restaurant patios will be able to open Friday. But even with business looking up, Vivaan faces a new hurdle. Nearly all of its staff are not returning and Mohan is scrambling to hire an entirely new team of servers, bartenders and support staff.

An Ottawa tech company is betting that COVID-19 has not killed indoor restaurant dining and that customers are even willing to pay a few extra dollars to snag prime tables at peak times.
Those customers could secure their preferred spots through the new reservation service tablz.com, launched by Ottawa-based Transparent Kitchen. The Tablz website, which links to the existing online reservation systems of restaurants, allows customers to take 3D tours of dining rooms and then pay between $4 and $10 for specific tables when the restaurant is busiest.
