And did a lot of research there. And i went to the military library in chicago which is , probably the best military library in the country. There may be one better, but it is extraordinary. And i started working on this book. I started developing it. I wrote four other books in between. Those were sort of to keep bread on the table, so to speak. I just became haunted by the story and tried to get deeper and deeper into it and discover who the people were, who saved the country. , for me it was a revelatory moment because i placeso go to libraries, and book sales to try to look up some of the things i write about in the book, like the louisiana maneuvers, for example, and found almost nothing. I really had to dig go through a , lot of archives and primary source materials, newspapers, daily newspapers from obscure places like small towns in louisiana and such. That is how i put it together, i came up with this to get it right. This is like telling how sausages are made, but i had two p

Y name is Eric Farnsworth i head the Washington Office of the counsel of the americas and the America Society. It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to review this book today, and to talk a little bit about the latino immigrant experience in the United States. Our guest is ray suarez, who has written a really terrific book entitled latino americans the 500year legacy that shaped a nation. Its a companion to the Ground Breaking pbs series on latino americans. In barely 250 pages, ray takes the reader through the broad sweep of Latino History in the United States, even before there was a United States, from the spanish explorers to the modern day. Its a majestic effort, in my view. Seeking to discover and highlight the history and future of the latino experience in the United States, and to put in context in order to build a broader appreciation for latino experience. It
Nancy i was interested in him when i was working on my on bourne. I had a lot of papers on the bou rnes. Letters, diaries. In the late 30s, when he was there, he was always showing up in some piece of paper. He was showing up as a very nice person. He took their children to the movies, played cards with them. As germans do. He was in their music ensemble. People liked him. He was very quiet, very shy, but he was a nice person. All of a sudden, he was a spy, and they were dumbfounded. I came into this information. They did not know much about him when i was first working on it. So, at that point, i thought i should find more about fuchs. I went to the archives in london and there were three little skippy files. Skimpy files. The very last when i looked at, had a letter from somebody in the administration saying, what am i supposed to do with all of fuchs files from his trial and everything . Dr. Mathieu is an associate professor of history at the university of minnesota. She is just finishing a faculty fellowship at Harvard Universitys center for studies in American History. She earned a joint phd in history and africanamerican studies and specializes in 20th century american and africanAmerican History with an emphasis on immigration, war, race, globalization, social movements and political resistance. She is the author of a number of books, one of which is available outside and i would encourage you to grab a copy while you can.
