A CUMBRIAN Bishop is leaving her role in the county, to take on a new position supporting both the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. The Rt Rev Dr Emma Ineson, Bishop of Penrith, will become the Bishop to the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, based at Lambeth Palace in London, from June 1. It means she will leave her role as Suffragan Bishop for the Diocese of Carlisle at the end of May, having been instrumental in leading the relaunch of the county’s ecumenical God for All vision. Bishop Emma said: “It has been a huge honour to minister and work alongside so many wonderful, Jesus-centred people in Cumbria. Equally it has been a privilege to call this beautiful and diverse county my home in recent years.
19/04/2021 Currently Bishop of Penrith, Bishop Emma will take up the position from 1st June 2021.
Archbishops Justin Welby and Stephen Cottrell have announced the Rt Revd Dr Emma Ineson as the new Bishop to the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. Currently Bishop of Penrith, Dr Ineson will take up the position from 1st June 2021.
The role reimagines and replaces the existing position of Bishop at Lambeth - the post currently held by Bishop Tim Thornton, who announced his retirement earlier this year - in order to facilitate closer working between Lambeth Palace and Bishopthorpe.
Bishop Emma will work directly for both Archbishops and closely with the whole College of Bishops. As a senior member of the Archbishops’ teams, she will play a key role in work being done on the future of the Church of England, appointments and liaising with the House of Bishops.

The current Bishop at Lambeth, the Rt Revd Tim Thornton, announced his retirement earlier this year (News, 12 February). The new arrangement is to “facilitate closer working” between Lambeth Palace and Bishopthorpe, a note from the Palace explained.
