Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan commanded the Trinidad, the lead ship, and four other vessels: the San Antonio, In 1521, the expedition was completed with only the Victoria returning to Spain carrying 18 surviving sailors out of the original 270. It was the Castilian navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano who took command and completed the expedition after Mr. Magellan was killed in the Battle of Mactan. Mr. Elcano completed the first recorded circumnavigation of the globe, covering a distance of 14,000 leagues.

NQC invites public to 18th Countdown to 500 Lecture on March 5

PARAÑAQUE CITY, March 3 (PIA) The National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) is inviting the public to join its online lecture dubbed, “Countdown to 500” on Friday, March 5 at 10 a.m., in preparation for the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (2021 QCP).  In the 18th Countdown to 500 Online Lecture, Dr. George Emmanuel Borrinaga of University of San Carlos will discuss the War God of Homonhon and the arrival of Magellan.  Homonhon is an island in the province of Eastern Samar on the east side of Leyte Gulf, and approximately 670 southeast of Manila. The Online Lecture series is a special program brought by the National Quincentennial Committee, Office of the President of the Philippines, and the Presidential Communications Operations Office. 

Vico Sotto chosen as one of 12 global anti-corruption champions

February 24, 2021 PASIG City Mayor Vico Sotto has been selected as one of 12 global anti-corruption champions by the United States Department of State. Sotto, 31, was cited for his commitment to transparency initiatives both as a Pasig city councilor and as mayor. As a Pasig City councilor in 2018, Sotto spent a month at the Des Moines Public Information Board in Des Moines, Iowa, as part of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Professional Fellows Program in the United States. “He used this experience to help him design and pass Pasig’s first freedom of information legislation when he returned to the Philippines,” the US Embassy in the Philippines said in a statement.
