IAF aerobatics display over Port City of Colombo

  By Shamindra Ferdinando Two F 7 GS multi-role jet fighters brought the SLAF’s flypast at the Galle Face Green on Wednesday (3) to an end. The flypast conducted to mark the 70th anniversary of the SLAF was definitely the largest ever such show held either during the conflict or in the post-war period. Sri Lanka brought the war to a successful conclusion on the morning of May 19, 2009, on the banks of the Nanthikadal lagoon. The conclusion of the flypast, featuring Bell 212, Bell 412 helicopters, Mi-17 helicopters, Cessna 150 aircraft, B200 Beech King aircraft, MA-60 aircraft, followed by a pair of F 7 GS jets, paved the way for a superlative IAF aerobatics display

Sri Lanka- Former Speaker W J M Lokubandara passed away

(MENAFN - Colombo Gazette) Former Speaker W.J.M Lokubandara passed away at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Angoda today while being treated for COVID-19. He was 81 years old at the time of his death. Lokubandara had tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month. He was Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka from 2004 to 2010 and Governor of Sabaragamuwa Province from 2010 to 2015. Lokubandara was appointed Minister of Cultural Affairs, Education and Media by President Ranasinghe Premadasa. With the defeat of the UNP in the General Elections of 1994, Lokubandara became the Chief Opposition Whip of Parliament. He held this position until 2001. A UNP Government was formed in 2001, and Lokubandara was appointed the Minister of Justice, Law Reforms, National Integration and Buddha Sasana.

Posted by Administrator on by D.B.S.Jeyaraj Anton Stanislaus Balasingham the political strategist of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE) and political adviser to tiger leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran died 14 years ago in his South London residence, His death was not unexpected as it was known, the doctors had given him four to six weeks to live. Bala ‘Annai’ (elder brother) as he was generally known among Tamils was diagnosed with bile duct cancer , a rare and aggressive malignancy of the biliary system. LTTE supremo Prabhakaran conferred the title “Thesathin Kural” (Voice of the nation)upon him posthumously. “I am proud to bestow the title of ‘Voice Of The Nation’ on Bala Annai.” Stated the LTTE chief and went on to say “Bala Annai has not left us. He will live permanently in our thoughts. ”

He represented the LTTE in all discussions with Norway while communicating regularly with Prabhakaran. Balasingham was primarily responsible on the LTTE side for getting the ceasefire adopted. It came into force from February 23, 2002
