Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu has died from Covid-19 complications. The minister tested positive for the virus on 11 January 2021 and he died on 21 January.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said: Minister Mthembu was an exemplary leader, an activist and life-long champion of freedom and democracy. He was a much-loved and greatly respected colleague and comrade, whose passing leaves our nation at a loss.
Drum had a chance to sit down with the minister a few months after he was appointed in the position.

It’s been seven months since he stepped into his role as minister in the presidency. He’s still so fresh in his post that his desk at Tuynhuys at parliament is free of the clutter that usually comes with years in office.

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Health has joined the country in mourning the loss of the Netcare team that tragically died in a helicopter crash in KwaZulu-Natal.
The medical rescue chopper went down near Bergville on Thursday, killing four healthcare workers and the pilot.
It emerged that Dr Rudolf Mononyane, who tried to save Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu s life was among the five people on board.

Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu died of Covid-19-related complications on Thursday, just 10 days after testing positive for the disease.
President Cyril Ramaphosa described him as an exemplary leader, an activist and life-long champion of freedom and democracy . He was a much-loved and greatly respected colleague and comrade, whose passing leaves our nation at a loss, Ramaphosa said in a statement.
Mthembu, 61, served as chief whip of the ANC in the National Assembly from 2016 to 2019.

Social media reacts to passing of Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu after the news that he succumbed to COVID-19 complications earlier on Thursday. He was 62-years-old.
Mthembu tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in January when he went to get medical attention for abdominal pain. Mthembu had thanked everyone who has wished him a speedy recovery.
