Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu passed on earlier on Thursday . The Presidency has sent condolences to his family.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time of loss,” says the Presidency in a statement.
Minister Mthembu has been described as an exemplary leader, an activist, and a life-long champion of freedom and democracy.
“He was a much-loved and greatly respected colleague and comrade, whose passing leaves our nation at a loss. I extend my deepest sympathies to the Minister’s family, to his colleagues, comrades, and many friends,” says the presidency.
Mthembu’s death comes as the country continues to battle the second wave of the coronavirus. The country currently has a total of 1 369 426 coronavirus cases.

Cape Town - The ANC and political parties across the board have paid tribute to Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu, who died of Covid-related complications on Thursday.
He was 62 years old.
The ANC conveyed âits heartfelt condolencesâ to the NEC memberâs family, friends, colleagues and comrades.
âThe passing of Jackson Mthembu is a great loss to South Africa and to our movement,â ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe said in a statement.
âBorn 5 June 1958 in Witbank (now Emalahleni, Mpumalanga), Cde Jackson (62) mostly referred to in his clan name âMvelaseâ has dedicated his entire life to the struggle for a better South Africa and world.

JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) South African Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu passed away on Thursday due to COVID-19 related complications, said President Cyril Ramaphosa.
This follows announcement few days ago that Mthembu was going into self-isolation after contracting COVID-19. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time of loss. Minister Mthembu was an exemplary leader, an activist and life-long champion of freedom and democracy, said the president.
He stated that Mthembu s death is a lot to the nation as he was loved and greatly respected.
Ramaphosa sent a message of condolences to Mthembu s family, friends and colleagues.
