runaway inflation. we re going to talk to one of the president s top advisers. and we re going to hear from president biden directly. he s speaking this hour as the white house is rolling out its plan to protect access to abortion. that s what we re watching at this hour. we begin with new developments in the assassination of japan s longest serving prime minister. shinzo abe killed, shot twice during a campaign speech earlier today. and the attack was caught on video. it is hard to watch. here are the moments the shots rang out. [ speaking foreign language ] [ gunshots ] police took the gunman into custody just moments after the shooting. officials say he s a local resident in his 40s, though his motive is not yet known. the assassination of the 67-year-old abe has shocked japan. a country where gun violence is extremely rare. his death also having an impact around the world. abe stepped aside as prime minister partly because of health issues in 2020, but he was one of t
pouring gasoline on the fire by tweeting that. the secret service couldn t control the situation and do their job to keep him safe. at 2:26 p.m., the secret service rushed vice president pence down the stairs. approximately 40 feet. that s all there was. 40 feet between the vice president and the mob. make no mistake about the fact that the vice president s life was in danger. the recent court filing by the department of justice explains that a confidential informant from the proud boys told the fbi that the proud boys would have killed mike pence if given the chance. that s just some of what we heard from yesterday s hearing into the attack on the capitol. as the committee detailed the close call for vice president pence, good morning and welcome to way too early. on this friday, june 17th. i m jonathan lemire. we re glad you re with us. the third day of testimony in the january 6th hearings focused on donald trump s efforts to pressure mike pence into overturning
executive privilege. i do think there are a lot of areas they can go into. i think cipollone will not provide, you know, word-for-word recitations of his conversations with trump. but that lays a lot of area where he can expound upon who said what to whom aside from the president and, of course, his views on all of this. in terms of the optics of this, how much does it matter that his testimony is going to be prerecorded, behind closed doors, instead of live, in person? well, it says to me that cipollone is more cautious, he s maybe not as willing to go against the former president. he s an institutionalist, i think, still a loyal republican. and so he s not willing to testify in public. i also think because of the legitimacy of the executive privilege claim for some of his potential testimony it s safer for him to do it behind closed doors instead of doing it in public so they don t have to navigate those issues on the fly. but you know, i think there
