this morning. we know that they started sharp around 8:30 this morning. and that they will deliberate until they reach a verdict. it sounded as if they were going towards that, they did not give any indication that they were hung or that they were having trouble coming up with a decision. that s what we heard from the foreperson yesterday. and as you know, they listened to closing arguments on monday. and then as in every trial, the prosecution gets the last word, the prosecution gets to rebutt, have a rebuttal argument, to sum up their case, and those are the last words that the jury hears, but as you know, it is not about the closing arguments, those help the jury understand from each side where they re coming from, but they have to look at the evidence. in this case, there are nine charges for each of the three defendants including murder and aggravated assault. and so you ll have this jury looking through a lot of information, ultimately the arguments go like this, the prosecution
the developments we ve seen this week in terms of impeachment with the intelligence reports from house democrats and house republicans followed this pretty politically divided polarized process we ve seen play out since the impeachment inquiry started. we saw republicans sort of put out a prebutt tall to democrats reports this week which sort of had a loose interpretation of the facts and went out of their way to argue against everything democrats have put forward. then we see democrats put forward their report. the bottom line here is this process has been so polarized that we see how republicans not really moving towards impeaching the president. we see democrats getting stronger in the way they make their case against him, but we don t see the two sides coming together over anything at all. of course this could all change with the house judiciary committee starting their public hearings today and really going through these articles of impeachment, but so far we ve seen the ways i
different dimensions. they re just not accepting the same facts. republicans are accepting the facts that were laid out by a multitude of witnesses and testified to what was happening in ukraine with the president wanting investigations. if you were on the house sb intelligence committee, how do you engage with that? directly, do you ignore it? the strategy? i think it s a real challenge here because the republican prebuttal ignores some clear facts and just claims that they don t exist. saying things like there was no conditionality when everyone saw sondland testify that there was at least as far as the white house meeting and he didn t know about the military aid. there are things where the republican report is clearly just cherry picking what has happened here so i think you have a really difficult time arguing when one side is not really looking at all of the facts presented. ari, you ve just joined me
jake. also with us, former intel staffer, mika. everybody, welcome. garrett, you were just talking with stephanie and ali, but i think we need to reset here. the top of a new hour. house democrats on the intel committee have yus released their report. this is i guess 12 hours, a little bit more than 12 hours or almost 24 hours, frankly, after the republicans released their prebutt ta prebuttal to this. is there anything unexpected? well, so far, the the report lays out in specific detail the actions that a the intel committee believes could be impeachable. it goes through laying out a scheme directed by the president, they say, to withhold this military aid in furtherance of his own agenda. if you were to watch the
administration is trying to kind of prebutt these arguments and expecting that even if there is not some bombshell that the details provided are going to be important here. just to circle back to you for a quick last word here, your point that even the details of those conversations will be significant, it is very rare that you have someone under oath who has the potential to cont contradict the president of the united states about those conversations, you know, president trump in a memo that s out there says on three separate occasions you told me i am not under investigation. i expect that james comey will give some kind of answer to that that either will directly contradict it or will confirm it in the answer to that question is huge either way. i think you re right, john, that comey will have some kind of answer like that. i think she makes a great point that the white house is setting up these rebuttals and preparing for whatever is to come on thursday and i think they have fi
