Israel announces third nationwide covid lockdown

Jerusalem, Dec 24: Israel announced Thursday that it will impose a nationwide lockdown from next week, its third of the Covid-19 pandemic, just days after it began vaccinations against the virus. A general lockdown will be imposed from 17:00 (1500 GMT) on Sunday for two weeks, a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu s office said. There is an option to extend the lockdown for an additional two weeks unless the basic reproduction number (for the virus) falls below 1 and the number of new cases per day falls below 1,000.
Israelis will be barred from travelling more than one kilometre (1,000 yards or so) from their homes and businesses will be closed except for deliveries.
India further slips down in Human Development Index, now stands at 131

New Delhi, Dec 16: India s Human Development Index or HDI position has marginally dropped after improving last year. In the latest UNDP s HDI ranking, India stands at 131. Last year India s ranking was 129.
HDR is UNDP s annual assessment of the state of human development worldwide and includes the Human Development Index (HDI), which measures individual countries progress.
However, UNDP officials say this doesn t mean India didn t do well but others did better. UNDP Resident Representative Shoko Noda praised India s commitment to reduce carbon emission and said that India can help other countries too.
Pranab Mukherjee s son, daughter spar over autobiography release

New Delhi, Dec 15: A month before its scheduled release, former President Pranab Mukherjee s memoir The Presidential Years has run into a controversy. The publisher, Rupa Publication, has announced that the memoir will be out in January.
However, Pranab Mukherjee s son, Abhijit Mukherjee has objected to it and has alleged that the publisher has leaked certain motivated excerpts .
Taking to Twitter, Abhijit Mukherjee said since his father is no more, he wants to go through the final work before it is published.
On the other hand, Abhijit s sister, Sharmishta Mukherjee has openly sided with the publisher and has hit out at Abhijit.
