People in a Portsmouth cul-de-sac are picking up the unexpected pieces from the dreary weather. Powerful wind knocked dozens of egrets from their nests.
About 40 egrets were blown from pine trees when a powerful wind gust traveling 80 miles per hour swept through Portsmouth on Sunday night. Melissa Manasse has lived in a neighborhood on the Elizabeth River for five years and has become familiar with the egret colony that calls a stand of loblolly pines home. “I enjoy them,” Manasse said of the graceful white birds with the long, S-shaped necks. .
Portsmouth Animal Control received a call shortly after noon about a possible animal cruelty incident in the 1500 block of Lane Place, off London Boulevard. The animal control unit is investigating the dogs’ deaths.
Officials said on May 26 around 12 p.m., the Portsmouth Animal Control unit became aware of a possible animal cruelty incident at Virginia Beach Dog Training, where eight dogs died.
