Republican senator john cornyn said correctly that there was absolutely no reason for what rand paul was doing. So the senator from kentucky by objecting to the unanimous consent request will effectively shut down the federal government. For no real reason. I know he wants to make a point. He has that right. I agree with many of his concerns about deficits and debt but we are in an emergency situation. When this bill passes the senate and it will, it will go to the house of representatives where it might face a bit more of a challenge. You know, friday is going to arrive which is going to be the date by which john kelly said the new security clearance thing was going to be in effect and either the new security clearance thing isnt going to be in effect and Jared Kushner is going to still have his gig or there will be nepotism suggestion for Jared Kushner or were all going to pretend they didnt say any of the things they said in the past week. I dont know. Im betting on the nepotism exception issued specifically by the president. He has the power to simply grant Jared Kushner whatever security clearance he decides to grant him. Republican senator rand paul used a procedural tactic to block the senate from speeding up the vote so that congress could meet the midnight debt line to approve the bill. Paul wanted senators to keep him on a vote. He protested the large price tag of the deal. Senate majority dealer Mitch Mcconnell and majority leader Chuck Schumer pleaded with paul objecting to the plan to allow the procedural vote to happen so they could finalize the deal. But paul did not waiver, beginning an hours long filibuster. Take a listen. Speaker of the house supports the bill, is waiting for it to pass the senate. The president of the United States supports the bill. And is waiting to sign it into law. Now, i understand my friend and colleague from kentucky does not join the president in supporting the bill. And its his right, of course, to vote against the bill. But i would argue that its time to vote.
