Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to the Middle East this week to meet separately with Israeli and Palestinian officials, part of the Biden administration s continuing diplomatic efforts after a ceasefire brought an end to 11 days of violence between Israel and Hamas. During his trip, Secretary Blinken will meet with Israeli leaders about our ironclad commitment to Israel s security, President Biden said in a statement announcing the trip Monday morning. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov agreed to meet next week, marking the first time the two top diplomats will sit down since President Biden s inauguration.
The State Department said in a readout of a call between Blinken and Lavrov that the two will meet in Reykjavik, Iceland, on the sidelines of the Arctic Council. The readout said the two discussed an array of issues, including the detention of two Americans in Russia and U.S. policy toward North Korea, also known as the Democratic People s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
