Steers at the Polk Youth Fair usually fetch $1.50 to $2.50 per pound. But a steer raised by a teen who was killed in a crash is fetching $30 per pound.
BARTOW If the name Lily Harwell, winner of the 2021 Polk County Youth Fair Grand Champion Open Steer competition, sounds familiar, that’s because you might have heard it before.
The 12-year-old has been there and done that before. She won the 2019 competition and even has a fancy belt buckle to show for it.
About 900 Polk County students competed in swine, horse, commercial heifers, beef steer and family consumer science project categories, along with a whip popping event at the 74th annual Polk County Youth Fair in Bartow at the Polk County Agriculture Complex. The poultry, rabbit and dog competitions were canceled this year because of COVID-19.
