War going on inside the gop. But in the last couple of months, the nontea party guys have for the first time in a long time started to win. It is time for a new Republican Party that talks like adults, we have got to stop being the stupid party. And the republican establishment striking back against the tea party. The conservative victory project. But it is not being used against democrats. Were talking about extremists, right . With a goal of recruiting. Less extreme candidates. Who can win. There are a lot of republicans who dislike each other. One possibility is a civil war. I feel like we should say oh, oh, oh. Okay, then. Karl rove as the reformer. Youre talking about karl rove . He built this thing. Karl is trying to unwind what he wound. Trying to prevent another meltdown. I think there will be bruising changes. They have a real problem. It is time for a new party to talk like adults, we have to stop being stupid party. We have the obligation to try. When the president heads to
We begin this afternoon with the clash of two statements, one delivered by a man whos enjoying some of the high he is Approval Ratings of his career. The other delivered by a thirdrate actor who is trying desperately to put a new phase on some tired old policies. The subject, a socalled sequester that will trigger is trillion dollars in spending cuts in less than four weeks. But weve also seen the effects that political dysfunction can have on our economic progress. That, of course, was the president seeking to protect a fragile recovery from falling back into recession if the sequester is allowed to occur. And then there was Speaker Boehner. The house on two occasions has passed a plan to replace the sequester. Its time for the Senate Democrats to do their work. Its time for the president to offer his ideas. Its hardly surprising that the speaker sounds bored by the very words coming from his very own mouth because it is the selfsame rhetoric that republicans have been spouting for ag
Its not the right thing for folks out there still looking for work. Our economy right now is headed in the right direction. And it will stay that way as long as there arent any more selfinflicted wounds coming out of washington. This selfinflicted wound would include massive cuts to virtually every government program. From medicare and housing to head start and food aid for children. The president wants republicans to delay those cuts through a balanced approach that would force corporations and the wealthy to give up some of their special tax break. And pay their fair share. These modest reforms in our social Insurance Programs have to go hand in hand with tax reform. So the wealthiest individuals and corporations cant take advantage of loopholes and deductions that arent available to most americans. There is no reason that the jobs of thousands of americans who work in National Security or education or clean energy, not to mention the growth of the economy should be put in jeopardy j
Also today, the unheralded but fairly dramatic resolution of a fight that Senate Republicans said they would win, but today they lost. Also today crime and punishment news concerning wall street where the consensus reaction off wall street was really . Those guys arent in jail already . Thats all ahead tonight. Plus charts imitating life. Weve got the onetime sheriff of wall street, former new york governor, new York Attorney general Eliot Spitzer here. Weve got more, as i said to ed, more on Michael Isikoffs big security scoop. There is lots ahead this hour. But we start tonight in the fall of 2008 when president obama was first elected. He was elected on november 4th, 2008. And after the partisan combat of that election faded quickly and the country absorbed that this was going to be our new president of the United States, the Approval Ratings for barack obama soared. His approval rates went to 79 . By Inauguration Day 2009, nearly two Million People would turn out on the National Ma
At some Point Washington has to deal with its spending problem. And when your dad says something, you listen. And when you dont, it usually bites you in the [ bleep ] later on. Ive had enough of it. Its time to act. The clock is now ticking on what many economists say is a nearcertain double dip recession if more than a trillion dollars in automatic spending and defense cuts are allowed to occur at the beginning of next month. And while the president is busy running the government, today nominating a new candidate for the interior department. And yesterday pleading for action to prevent the socalled sequester, republicans have been out front telling anyone who will listen that they, too, are absolutely opposed to any cuts to military and discretionary spending. I dont like the sequester. I think its taking a meat ax to our government. A meat ax to many programs, and it will weaken our national defense. However, just to be clear, Speaker Boehner says that he will not allow any new reven
