I have moderated a lot of programs for the American Bar Association before but i have learned so much preparing for this one because this is not a topic on which i work every day. This aqueduct built in 1927 in oakland is still in use today. East bay m. U. D. Representatives say there are miles of pipelines like this that need an upgrade. Its more expensive to allow things to break completely than to replace them before they break down. Reporter add to that need the fact that customers are using less water thanks to the drought and conservation efforts. When ratepayers cut their use last year, east bay m. U. D. Lost 30 million in revenue out of nearly 1 billion budget. I realize the predicament the east bay m. U. D. Is in. Reporter the board of directors is scheduled to vote this afternoon on a 19 rate increase. If approved, customers will pay 9 more on their water bill starting tomorrow and another 9. 25 more a year from now. Ive done everything i can over the years. Im 70, to conserve water.
