But Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Police Chief Calvin Williams said the city was prepared to handle unrest had the trial ended with a different result, with Williams saying he had arranged to have enough officers available to deal with any situation. The city was quiet Tuesday, with a peaceful demonstration held downtown after the verdict. Also in Cleveland, City Councilman Ken Johnson has been suspended while he remains under a criminal indictment. And in other news, U.S. Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, an Ohio Republican, is reintroducing a bipartisan bill that would let college athletes across the country be compensated for their names, images and likenesses.

There have already been 47 homicides in the city of Cleveland as of Tuesday, 12 more than this time in 2020. During a press conference Tuesday, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams noted that the city s gun confiscation totals are 100% above where they were at this time last year.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The mayor of Cleveland held a press conference on Tuesday afternoon regarding issues of public safety and recent crimes, particularly those involving gun violence.
Mayor Frank Jackson was joined by Cleveland Division of Police Chief Calvin Williams and Public Safety Director Karrie Howard.
According to Mayor Jackson, the city of Clevelandâs homicide totals in 2021 are already at least 12 over last last yearâs pace. To date, Cleveland has at least 46 deaths classified as homicides.

CLEVELAND Cleveland police are prepared for any protests or civil unrest that may develop once a verdict is reached in the Derek Chauvin trial. We try to stay ready. Dealing with protests is not new to us. We stay on our game, in regards to that, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said Tuesday. The police department and our emergency operations people are in constant conversation on what they anticipate will happen.
Should the need arise, Jackson said he would call on the Ohio National Guard or suburban police partners to quell unrest in Cleveland.
