I wasn’t allowed in the Creative Writing program at the University of Arizona in 1964 because, as the professor informed me, I was a girl. A few years later, my first husband, someone who had been allowed in the Creative Writing program that was closed to me, told me that there was only going to be one writer in our family and he was it.
Well guess what? I have a new book coming out on February 16, Joanna Brady # 19, Missing and Endangered. I just went through my book catalogue. Without counting any of the novellas, M&E, as we call it around here, is published book number 65! Not bad for a girl!
All throughout 2020 since March, anyway a song rattled around in my head: People Who Died, by the Jim Carroll Band. It was a minor hit in the early 1980s; maybe you know it. Carroll, the punk-poet author of
The Basketball Diaries, wrote it as a sort of tribute to friends he knew who died before their time. Some of them met wild ends: a guy killed by bikers, a woman who jumped in front of a subway train. Others left Earth via less dramatic but nevertheless heartbreaking routes. My favorite line goes:
Bobby got leukemia, fourteen years old / He looked like sixty-five when he died / He was a friend of mine. The chorus goes:

Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish star in the series Clanlands. Outlander, the famed story of Claire, a time-traveling nurse, and her Scottish lover, Jamie, has been a fan-favorite since local author Diana Gabaldon published the first book back in 1991. In 2014, STARZ released a live action series based on the books, which skyrocketed the series into cult status for fans across the world.
Now, two of the stars from the show, Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish, have joined together to write Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other a book detailing their journey from the lowlands to the highlands of Scotland.

PHOENIX â Throughout the pandemic, many people have rekindled old hobbies and interests or found new ones, such as reading more, cooking more, coloring, puzzles, or working out.
For independent bookstores around the Valley, that meant taking their business operations mostly online. While a better-than-most problem to have, it does not make up for the community that s missing inside those stores hosting book clubs, author meet-and-greets and book signing, and workshops.
