car chase put the capital building on lockdown and left the driver in the chase dead. it all started around 2:15 p.m. when 34-year-old dental hygienist miriam carey struck a barrier at the security checkpoint. she took off towards the capital at speeds of up to 80 miles per hour. secret service and capitol police were able to corner the car in front of the capital at which point carey backed away, struck a police car and crashed into another barrier. details are unclear as to what happened next. according to reports carey exited her car and shots were fired. miriam carey was pronounced dead thursday afternoon. reports indicate she was not armed. her 1-year-old child was also in the car but remains unharmed. at this point carey s motive is unknown. family members do not know why
