Firefighters work on controlling the fire. Robbie Allan and his fiancée were visiting Waimate for the day to walk to the White Horse Monument when they smelt something, then saw what looked like a fire behind the old homestead. Allan said he got his camera out to zoom in and noticed it was the house that was ablaze. He said it was about 2pm when they called emergency services. Soon after, they heard the Waimate Fire Station alarm sounding.

”It’s aimed at the younger ones, these tracks will be really good entry level fun,’’ Luckman said. ”It’s easy but it’s got ramps and curved edges, junior riders can get the skills without the risk.”

William Caird, 5, enjoy the new mountain bike tracks in Waimate. Luckman said the event had raised more than $80,000 for various charities over the past five years. Hundreds of man and machine hours had also been logged to create a number of trails for the bike riding and running/ walking events. New Zealand Land Search and Rescue, KiwiSport, Rotary Club of Waimate, Whitehorse Mountainbike Club, Waimate School of Music, Centrecare Counselling Waimate and the Waimate Harriers will be among those to benefit from the fundraiser.
