It is full stream ahead for the Waihao Community Restoration Project.
The project was established to redevelop the Waihao River area as a recreational amenity, and it is about to pick up momentum.
In February, the Waimate District Council approved the establishment of a memorandum of understanding with the Waihao Wainono Community Catchment Group.
Last year, the group was granted funding from the Canterbury Community Trust, on the condition it gained approval from the Waimate District Council.
Catchment group chairman Roger Small said the river area was once a nice spot for people to gather and enjoy a picnic.
But in 1986, the landscape was altered by flooding.

”It’s aimed at the younger ones, these tracks will be really good entry level fun,’’ Luckman said. ”It’s easy but it’s got ramps and curved edges, junior riders can get the skills without the risk.”

William Caird, 5, enjoy the new mountain bike tracks in Waimate. Luckman said the event had raised more than $80,000 for various charities over the past five years. Hundreds of man and machine hours had also been logged to create a number of trails for the bike riding and running/ walking events. New Zealand Land Search and Rescue, KiwiSport, Rotary Club of Waimate, Whitehorse Mountainbike Club, Waimate School of Music, Centrecare Counselling Waimate and the Waimate Harriers will be among those to benefit from the fundraiser.
