New-style roundabouts are coming to the Girard/Platea interchange of Interstate 90 in Girard Township.
The twin teardrop roundabouts, so-called because of their teardrop shape, will be the first in Pennsylvania when they are built at each end of a new Route 18 bridge over the interstate next year.
Local opinion on the planned roundabouts is mixed. Some local residents look forward to the twin teardrops. Others say they ll be a nuisance.
Roundabouts rationale: Improved safety, less cost
The teardrop roundabouts will carry Route 18 traffic across the interstate. They also will carry traffic getting off the interstate and turning left to cross the bridge.
