The Conversation: The Kōloa Plantation and the Early Days of Sugar in the Islands

/ In 1835, Hawaiʻi s first commercial sugar plantation opened for business on Kauaʻi, at Kōloa, approximately 10 miles south of Lihue. The Kōloa Plantation went through a lot of changes over more than a century and a half, and its work continued until 1996. We celebrate Kauaʻi s history with the Center for Oral History at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The Conversation was joined by Ada Koane, who is working on a book about the Kōloa Plantation, and Melissa McFerrin, the coordinator of the Kōloa Plantation Days, an annual celebration that s held every summer.
