The forces and the presence of the pkk, none of these issues are easy and none of them are going to go away tomorrow. The kurds are fighting isis right now, they are kind of the pointy end of the spear, they are not perfect and they need more support in our view. I think eventually the International Community will come around to giving them that support. I would like to see it happen sooner rather than later. That does not mean theres not questions with the impact on the pkk, how turkey would address that, and nervousesness in iran and others. But the truth is, the most urgent challenge right now is defeating isis, and retaking the territorial integrity of iraq and syria. So long as thats an equation, none of the other issues can move forward and things are going to get worst and hundreds on of thousands of people are going die. So, i think we need to look at the kurds as an integral and essential part of the battle and treat them as an ally accordingly. And all the other issues. What

Relations with china and what we can expect from the summit. This is 40 minutes. With president obama attending the asiapacific Economic Cooperation summit this week were joined at our desk by bonnie glasser. Remind us of the significance of he submit and what the president is trying to do. Guest president obama is attending the summit in beijing along with the leaders of 20 other economies, to talk about trade liberalization. This is an agenda of this organization that was created in 1989, to try and promote smoother investment and reduce tariffs on goods that are exchanged among all of these 21 economies. Capability. So i dont, i wouldnt regard any iran agreement on enrichment as a precedent although i do believe that if the p5plusone countries managed to achieve an agreement with iran this would improve prospects for a productive negotiation with the north. On the other hand fail lure to Reach Agreement between p5plusone and iran i think would further reduce the probability of effective negotiations with the dprk. But the subject of this of this panel is korea and major powers. Picking up on your cue, Ambassador Park, i will talk about north korea and major powers. Of the north korean relations with major powers clearly its relationship with china is the most important. China is the main supplier of food and fuel to north korea. It is its biggest trading partner and china has made a conscientious and persistent efforts to get north korea back on the path of denuclearization but china has been terribly frustrated in its dealings with north korea over recent years. It has been frustrated
Dialogue can contribute and not fashion to peace and prosperity in a very important region of the world. And they can also stimulate and form and other faith public debate on the risks and opportunities that policymakers in washington, seoul and beijing are dealing with. To get us started, we have a distinguished american official who was very much involved in policymaking here in washington and also in the stewardship of u. S. Relations with the republic of korea, peoples republic of china and other important nations in that region. Danny russell, whom ive had the honor of knowing and working with for many years as assistant secretary of state for east asia and pacific affairs. He recently within the last couple of weeks returned from travels with president obama to china, burma and australia. He is going to provide us with an overview of u. S. Interests and policies in the region. So danny, welcome back to brookings and thanks for giving us the view from washington and the view from
President obama hosted a trilateral meeting in march in the hague, where he and president obama park and Prime Minister abe consulted on the north korean threat and other concerns. Those groupings are based on shared values like democracy, human rights, and respect for international law. And theyre based also on shared interests, both in the pacific and across the globe. And the group that ill be joining tomorrow, ahead to new delhi, is a periodic u. S. Japanindia trilateral consultation. So these are just a few examples that attest to the possibility of plurilateral, multilateral engagement. They attest to the utility of a flexible geometry involving northeast Asian Countries with the United States. So in that vane, we welcomed president parks call last month z resumption of the trilateral Foreign Ministers meeting among china, the republic of korea and japan. I think theres a widespread hope and expectation that after the meeting of the three Foreign Ministers, a meeting of the leade
