ever. reporter: and two previous crash investigations raised potential questions about how egypt reaches its conclusions. the egyptians have the opportunity to issue an unbiased report. we ve heard very little from them so far. a few contradictory statements. they are under enormous pressure. reporter: peter goelz headed the ntsb investigation into the crash into flight 990 in 1999. the flight left jfk bound for carry and plunged into international waters off the coast of massachusetts. egypt was initially in charge of that investigation. the ntsb took over. but when pilot suicide appeared to be the cause, egypt launched its own parallel investigation. we became convinced that this was a deliberate act and the pilot, co-pilot had flown that plane into the ground.
you participated in that investigation, peter, right. i did. egyptians never accepted publicly the u.s. conclusion that it was pilot suicide that brought that plane down, right. officially, their position is, that it was some sort of mechanical failure with the elevator which we thought the ntsb thought that was foolishness, it was clear what was happening to the aircraft. you used to work for the ntsb. there still bad blood, you think, between the u.s. and egypt as far as aviation investigations are concerned? i think there may be some residual resentment over that for all of the reasons peter mentioned. of course, but we have other european countries that are there, french are very reliable, they ll be looking over everybody s shoulder, irish are good. i don t think either egypt or the russians would pull the
wrestling with that problem. it s a serious one. they are concerned about it, particularly after germanwings. i think you will see steps to be more inquisitive on the pilot s mental health and being able to report more on it. you think there s a way do that? i think there is. i consult for a company that does that. for aviation and law enforcement and other entities. it s possible. there are systems out there to do those kind of background checks, not just on the aptitude to mechanically handle the airplane but the other issues of character profile and mental health issues and reasons that someone the germanwings didn t commit just suicide, it was mass murder. if that s what happened in this case, again, it s more than pilot suicide. it s mass murder. there were so many red flags in that case that officials should have been able to see. certainly, if they could have seen them, they would have been able to determine some very important information. tom, peter, miles, thank you s
breach of safety rules. as the search stretched into months former faa investigator thomas anthony kept returning to this question why the systematic shutdown of tracking devices aboard the plane. is that a coincidence? it is an incredible coincidence. reporter: anthony spent 25 years with the faa and tsa investigating crimes against civil aviation. he agrees with the initial u.s. assessment that there was a deliberate act from mh-370 s cockpit. and in part because mh-370 s disappearance feels so familiar. anthony investigated the crash of egypt air flight 990, many concluded it was caused by pilot suicide. silk air flight 185, american authorities also determined it crashed because of actions taken by the pilot. reporter: what is your theory now regarding mh-370? in view of the context of all of the evidence of everything
