Combs Hanover has put together terrific numbers to start the year for trainer/driver Paul MacDonell, but in order to improve those stats the trotter was going to have to swim with the sharks in the Preferred ranks at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
It was a Tuesday evening test that Combs Hanover passed with flying colours.
Sent off as the 4-5 choice in the $34,000 affair, the gelding got away seventh for MacDonell while Pikachu Hanover fired to the lead and supplied the field with fractions of :27.1, :56.3 and 1:25. MacDonell was eighth and parked at the half with his charge, and then seventh and parked three-wide around the final turn and all the way to the three-quarter pole.

Rich And Miserable earned his fourth consecutive win on Thursday (April 22) when he took the $14,400 featured trot at Harrah’s Philadelphia in 1:53.3.
Even though he was sitting in the normally-advantageous second position, Rich And Miserable rated far behind pacesetting Pikachu Hanover, who sailed along on an open lead in remarkable fractions of :27, :55.3 and 1:23.1. Pikachu Hanover could not sustain that energy usage, however, and Rich And Miserable narrowed in through the backstretch and drew off in the stretch for driver Tyler Buter, trainer Todd Buter, and owners Buter Farm Inc., Lynette Buter, and William and Carol Fuhs. The Explosive Matter gelding ran his career tally to 27-for-76, with earnings of $507,636.
