The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
In “Power Broker”, episode 3 of
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, we see Sam and Bucky team up with Baron Zemo to track the source of the super soldier serum. Zemo takes them to the small island nation of Madripoor, which is located in Southeast Asia in the southern portion of the Strait of Malacca. The country was founded by pirates, and has continued to be a haven for the most unsavory and lawless Marvel characters. Madripoor is divided between wealthy and connected Hightown and impoverished and struggling Lowtown. Like its fellow MCU locales Sokovia and Wakanda, Madripoor has a rich history within the Marvel universe, and it’s introduction here sets the stage for the merging of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It was cruel. Aside from leaving the door ever-so-slightly cracked for a Season Two and creating yet another version of Vision,
WandaVision s season finale wrapped up the whole Pietro/Fietro saga. If you need to be reminded: A couple weeks ago, Evan Peters, who played Quicksilver in Fox s recent X-Men films, showed up in
WandaVision as. Quicksilver. Naturally, we thought this was Marvel s way of introducing the multiverse. Joke s on us. In the finale, Fietro is revealed to be nothing more than an aspiring actor named Ralph Bohner (groan), whom Agatha Harkness merely spellbound into doing her bidding and posing as Wanda s long-dead brother.
I tuned in to
WandaVision each week because I loved the way the show wanted to explore things like our relationship to television, the power of escapism, and the wonder that is Kathryn Hahn. It simultaneously existed within and pushed against the boundaries of the very rigid Marvel machine. But most of all, it took a character who is so criminally minimized in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda Maximoff, and gave her the space to tell a story about grief and loss, stasis and movement. In Wanda’s case, she manifests her grief through recreating the old television shows she once watched with her family.

The return of Marvel hero Quicksilver / Pietro Maximoff in episode five of WandaVision was a real shock. The character had been dead since the 2015 movie Age of Ultron when he was shot while protecting Hawkeye (played by Jeremy Renner). Even more surprising about Quicksilver’s return was that he was not played by the original Marvel actor, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but by Evan Peters.
It was Agatha all along, but Agatha still needs answers she came here to figure out what the heck s going on. So Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) takes Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) on a journey through her past in the appropriately titled episode, “Previously On,” to try and get to the bottom of it.
Some pieces of Wanda’s Marvel Cinematic Universe history are familiar, and some are new. Almost all of them are heartbreaking, and they all involve Wanda using television to cope.
Been there, friend Wanda. Been there.

Before we go into Wanda’s past, though, we get a flashback with Agatha Harkness. We see her about to be destroyed by her own coven of witches in 1693 Salem because Agatha delved into dangerous magic that was off-limits. The coven s powers are no match for Agatha’s, though, and before long, her coven is shriveled and gone, their magic seemingly absorbed by Agatha.
