Lawrence Cronin paid his dues: from bartending at an Irish bar to working reservations at a ‘clothing optional’ resort – the mind shudders. But wine making was always the end goal.
And he certainly achieved it, working at some of the best wineries all around the world in California, New Zealand, Australia and Chile.
But despite growing up in the States, the pull of the old world – and his Italian heritage – eventually won out.
In 2002, he was hired as the Winemaker for Tenuta di Arceno. With guidance from legendary vigneron Pierre Seillan, he has helped elevate this historic estate into the upper tier of Tuscan producers.

As a wine writer and critic, I am frequently asked to name my favorite wine. It’s an annoying question, like asking an art critic what is their favorite painting, but it invariably comes from an innocent curiosity and enthusiasm, so I try not to roll my eyes when asked. Instead, I demur, and say that while I can’t name a single wine, my best answer to the spirit of the question is that if I had to drink the wines from just one country for the rest of my life, that country would, without question, be Italy.

The year was 1995. Jess Jackson and his wife Barbara Banke were riding high on the wave of success that had propelled Kendall-Jackson from upstart wine producer to become something of a giant in the American wine business.
Like other American producers of a certain scale, Jackson and Banke began to build relationships outside the United States, and at the time, the place to do that was VinExpo, the biannual wine exhibition held in Bordeaux. During her inaugural visit, Banke, who spoke excellent French, was introduced by a mutual friend to Pierre Seillan, a barrel-chested, big-fisted former rugby player from Gascony.
