why did this happen? this morning, new information on the victims, the suspect,nd why police want to find this man. today, sunday, january 9, man. today, sunday, january 9, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, everyone. welcome to a special split edition of today on this sunday morning. i m lester holt live in tucson, arizona. i m jenna wolfe inside studio 1-a here in new york. what a horrible tragedy. lester, i understand details are still emerging there this morning. a lot being sorted out this morning, jenna. it happened at this shopping center behind me where congresswoman gabrielle giffords was hosting a sidewalk gathering for constituents. a gunman walked up, opened firen oh her and then on the crowd. six people were killed. among them a 9-year-old girl and a u.s. district judge, federal judge. at least 13 others were injured including congresswoman giffords. she was shot in the head but remarkably survived after undergoing brain
operating room and in the hands of the exceptional individuals. another individual to mention is the surgery chair dr. grussner. he joined us three-and-a-half years ago and built extraordinary team in surgery and trauma. you will hear from them later on it s safe to say that this team is second to none. and the timeline, the rapid response they have here saved lives, nothing short of saving lives. you will hear from the chief of neurosirens. chief of trauma, critical care and emergency surgical care. i offer on behalf of the entire university of arizona community, certainly tucson, area, and beyond that, our appreciation and thanks for remarkable skills of the individuals. university of arizona is proud to be associated with the healthcare and play a role in this. my pleasure to introduce dr. grussner, chair of surgery here. thank you, doctor. i will be brief. this is a sad day for the families, for the community, for the state of arizona and for nation. our hearts go out t
congresswoman, got inline, and then got out of line, walked up to her and shot her in the head at point blank range. one of the people who was standing just feet away, dr. steven rail, a former er doctor who now works as a tucson hospice, talked to me just a short time ago about how that scene unfolded. it was a very quiet event. there was perhaps 20 to 25 people there. i had just arrived, and i walked up to the table where the congressman was, and looked at her. she was wearing a bright red jacket and had a smile on her face, looked very relaxed and was talking to a couple. i proseed around to the side of the table, around a concrete post and looked up just as she was being shot. it took a couple of seconds to register. there was a certain unreality to it. i yuinitially thought is this a stunt to scare people but the gunman didn t hesitate to continue firing rapidly, i think 15 to 20 rounds. reporter: in fact, what police tell us is that he may have had as many as 90 rou
