Indonesia Expands Submarine Fleet in Response to China s Aggression in South China Sea

Indonesia Expands Submarine Fleet in Response to China’s Aggression in South China Sea Indonesian military sources have revealed that the country is planning to expand its submarine fleet from four vessels to 12, in response to China’s repeated incursions into disputed waters in the South China Sea. Indonesia has the world’s third largest water territory under its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), but currently has just four submarines. By contrast, Japan ranks sixth in water territory and has 20 submarines. Indonesia originally had five submarines, but lost one KRI Nanggala-402 during an accident off Bali on April 21. A search and rescue team found that the submarine had sunk to the bottom of the sea and broken into three pieces, killing all 53 crew members. The German-made Nanggala-402 had been in service for 40 years.

China s Sand Dredgers Are Eating Into Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines: US Coast Guard Should Step Up

China’s Sand Dredgers Are Eating Into Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines: US Coast Guard Should Step Up Commentary China’s sand dredgers have destroyed thousands of square kilometers of ocean floor in order to build sand islands on which they put military runways and docking facilities for submarines and aircraft carriers. The construction of a single such Chinese island, Mischief Reef (5.6 square kilometers) on Philippine maritime territory, impacted 1,200 square kilometers with plumes of sediment that smothered life on the ocean floor. This implies that the approximately 12.9 square kilometers that China created in the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of the Philippines and Vietnam since 2013 impacted approximately 2,785 square kilometers of ocean floor.

He asked Pompeo about the meaning behind Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s speech at the summit, quoting Xi’s words: “To protect the environment is to protect productivity, to boost the environment is to boost productivity, it’s as simple as that.”

Might s right: China uses military muscle to override legal shortcomings

Might s right: China uses military muscle to override legal shortcomings By Viet Anh   April 29, 2021 | 07:55 am GMT+7 Clearly disadvantaged in making South China Sea claims under international law, China s gray zone tactics are thin cover for deploying its muscle power. China s strategy is being implemented with a power-based approach versus a rules-based approach, said Cmdr. Jonathan Odom, Military Professor of International Law, Marshall Center for Security Studies. He was speaking Tuesday in his personal capacity at a virtual webinar on the Rule of Law and Gray Zone Activities in the East and South China Seas, hosted by Pacific Forum, a non-profit, foreign policy research institute based in Honolulu, Hawaii, the U.S.
